“This is the very best way to love. Put your life on the line for your friends” John 15:13
Love is a word which means so much to so many. The definition will range from short and sweet too long and lengthy.
February is the month we celebrate love in the Western world. February 14 is Valentine’s Day -if you’re reading this before February 14 ---Happy Valentine’s Day!!
Love is a small four-letter word – But what does love really mean?
Love is defined as:
-----strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties
------ warm attachment, enthusiasm, or devotion
---------- the object of attachment, devotion, or admiration
Love -that is a very simple word but think about it…..
When was the last time you actually used the phrase I love you and meant it. My kids and I always tell each other I love you at the end of every phone call or text. This is something “we do “and I know it may seem cliché or mundane in or even disingenuous ………
but it’s what “we do”. When my kids were growing up – I wanted them to know and experience love freely. I wanted to them to not only know what love means in words, but to experience love in action daily. We are a very close family and thank God, I know my children Love me., and I know they know I LOVE them without a shadow of a doubt.
My heart has not always been so open to love. It took me years – to fall in love with me – I mean truly love myself just as I am. I didn’t always have the awareness I possess today.
As Maya Angelou stated – “When you know Better You do Better”
I had to really fall in Love with God in-order to truly fall in love with me. Believe it or not, I have been heartbroken, not just in love relationships, and friendships, acquaintances but by other events in my life. Take a moment – Think about your life ,,,,,
I’m sure you have experienced -
Loss of Friendships
To name a few. I’m sure you have experienced heartbreak on many different levels. If you haven’t – you live long enough – and eventually you will.
There Is Hope…. I can truly say that the Love of God sustained me through all of those life altering events. God’s Love was the one thing that I could count on. It was the constant in the midst of all of those “Life” events.
However, As I mentioned earlier- it wasn’t always this way. I remember one of my Mentors proclaimed when I when we met almost 10 years ago --“God is my first love“. I nodded my head in agreement politely. I didn’t want her to think I was not as “spiritual” as she was. However, it took me years, to actually to understand what she said and mean it for myself.
Today, I can declare it freely and boldly now “God is my first love”!! Does that mean I’m a fanatic or religious or holier than thou???? NO,! Does that mean that I am only in love with God, NO!!
I’m a person of faith in God and I am a believer. My relationship with God allows me to love… it gives me the strength and the courage and the freedom to love:
Love never fails ---Love covers all--Love is Kind
Remember as you speak the words, I love you, ask yourself do you really love or am I going through the motions
Do I really know what love means?
Do I really know what it means to Love Myself?
Do I really know what it means to be in Love with Someone?
